Reruns made me watch it.

"Joey, do you like gladiator movies?"

Yes, Yes I do.

Something about those movies from the late 50's early 60's ... those huge over production behemoth like Ben Hur and such ... the ones that are 3 hours... have some huge score written for them and include a cast with thousands of extras ...

The Fall of the Roman Empire

It was bad.... but it wasn't really bad until about 2 hours into this colossal waste of 3 hours.

IT had such a good start
Alec Guinness playing Marcus Aurelius, Caesar. Who in the beginning knows he is dying and instead of leaving the throne of Caesar to his son, decides to make his favorite General the heir to the throne, while he is engaged in fighting the northern barbarians .... sound familiar... yea I thought this was going to be the expanded/ original version of Gladiator. Same premise, same time frame, same characters ... This one even had Sophia Loren playing the daughter that was in love with the General. Who, by the way was suppose to be played by Heston, but he backed out, apparently.
So there I am watching what I thought was going to be this grand original telling of Gladiator, with Alex Guinness, Sophia Loren, and even Omar Sharif... a good cast.
How mistaken I was... basically in this version.. though they hint at gladiators in the entire first hour of the movie... the evil son never really does anything bad to the general until the end.. and the ending is just awful. I understand why at imdb it is referred to as a flop. Just wish I had known before sitting through that much crap ... but it was still better than all the reruns that were on last night.
